Prevent Blindness Declares December as
“Give the Gift of Sight” Month
-Non-profit, Prevent Blindness, Ohio Affiliate, Seeks Public Support for
Sight Saving Services and Gift Giving-
Columbus, OH (Dec. 9, 2020) – Since 1908, Prevent Blindness, the nation’s oldest charitable voluntary eye health organization, has worked to provide information, services and programs to protect vision in the United States. Through the support of the American public, Prevent Blindness has continued its mission to advocate, educate and empower people to make healthy vision a priority. The group is declaring December as “Give the Gift of Sight Month,” asking the public to reflect on the joys of healthy vision, and donate to Prevent Blindness, Ohio Affiliate.
Consumers have many options to “Give the Gift of Sight” this holiday season.
As a charitable organization, the Ohio Affiliate exists on donations from individuals, corporations, foundations and organizations. It’s easy to give by going to our website, www.pbohio.org, and click on the “Donate” button. You can even give your gift in honor of someone – a great way to give something meaningful to someone with a passion for eye health, or the person with “everything.”
Another way to “Give the Gift of Sight” is to choose gifts with eye safety in mind.
For those considering purchasing sports equipment, Prevent Blindness suggests that proper sports eye protection also be included. Recommendations may be found at www.preventblindness.org/recommended-sports-eye-protectors.
Sunglasses with UV protection can be a helpful gift for adults and children. Only buy sunglasses that provide a clear statement about how much UV radiation is blocked. The label should clearly state the sunglasses block 99 to 100 percent of UV-A and UV-B rays.
For all other gift ideas, Prevent Blindness recommends:
- Ensure the toy is right for the child’s ability and age. Consider whether other, smaller children may be in the home and may have access to the toy.
- Avoid purchasing toys with sharp or rigid points, spikes, rods, or dangerous edges.
- Buy toys that will withstand impact and won’t break into dangerous shards.
- Avoid toys that shoot or include parts that fly off.
- Read all warnings and instructions on the package.
The Ohio Affiliate of Prevent Blindness serves all 88 Ohio counties, advocating for and providing direct services to more than 1,000,000 Ohioans annually through vision screenings, matching at-risk children and adults with donated eye exams and eyeglasses, as well as educating millions of consumers about what they can do to protect and preserve their precious gift of sight.
