Prevent Blindness and Frost Brown Todd honor Xavier University and Michael J. Graham, S.J. with the People of Vision Award
Cincinnati,OH (March 25, 2020) Due to the recent developments around COVID-19 and the safety recommendations from the Ohio Department of Health and the CDC, Xavier University and Michael J. Graham, S.J., were presented with the 2020 People of Vision Award virtually instead of through the in-person event that was scheduled to take place at The Cintas Center in Cincinnati on March 25.
Since 1985, The Ohio Affiliate of Prevent Blindness has recognized and awarded select organizations and their leaders for visionary leadership and community service. The People of Vision Award Dinner has become one of Southwest Ohio’s premier charitable events in support of The Ohio Affiliate of Prevent Blindness (PBO) and its mission to prevent blindness and preserve sight.
After receiving the 2019 People of Vision Award, Adam Hall and Frost Brown Todd LLC served as chair of this year’s event. Mr. Hall asked that we join him in honoring Xavier University and Michael J. Graham, S.J. for their amazing contributions to the educational advancement and quality of life throughout the region. Mr. Hall feels Fr. Michael Graham is a worthy recipient of this honor.
\”Michael J. Graham, S.J. is the longest-serving president in the history of Xavier University, one of the oldest Catholic universities in the United States (founded in 1831). Under Fr. Graham’s leadership, Xavier University is a highly respected institution of higher learning, receiving a top 5 ranking during the current academic year for regional universities in the Midwest from U.S. News & World Report. He has been a visionary leader during his time at Xavier University, who has inspired tens of thousands of graduates to become people of learning and reflection, integrity and achievement, in solidarity for and with others.
Fr. Graham’s vision also encompasses his community beyond the campus of Xavier University. His passion to connect with local and regional communities led him to establish the Community Building Institute and the Eigel Center for Community Engagement at Xavier. He also was asked to chair the Cincinnati Preschool Promise Board of Directors in 2017, a voter-approved initiative to ensure that quality preschool is available and affordable to all children living within the Cincinnati public school district. Fr. Graham also serves on the boards of the Center for Holocaust and Humanity Education, Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities, Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati, Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities, and on the Big East Council of Presidents.\”
Xavier University and Michael J. Graham, S.J. proudly accepted this honor through the following statement:
\”I’ve known a number of people through my career with a variety of vision challenges—friends of the University with macular degeneration, students and employees here with vision challenges of one kind or another. It’s a hidden disability, one we don’t often think about. Most of us have the luxury of never having to worry about it. I’m grateful to the work of Prevent Blindness for helping us to see better, for those who can’t see at all or only with difficulty, and for helping their clients live the full and rewarding lives God intends them to live.
The work of Prevent Blindness is important in many ways, but I’m really impressed by how they target vulnerable populations. In my experience, when it comes to bad times or bad situations, it’s always the poor and vulnerable who are hurt the most. And so the fact that Prevent Blindness deliberately reaches out to the vulnerable in our midst touches me deeply. It’s a walk we all are called to walk.\”
Prevent Blindness, Ohio Affiliate is proud to honor Xavier University and Michael J. Graham, S.J. with the People of Vision Award. Sherry Williams, President and CEO of PBO stated:
\”Prevent Blindness is honored to have the opportunity to present the People of Vision award to Xavier University and Michael J. Graham, S.J.. Xavier University has been supporting the sight saving programs of Prevent Blindness for several decades. They are truly a visionary leader in the Southwest Ohio Community.”
Prevent Blindness, Ohio Affiliate looks forward to the 2021 People of Vision Award event where Xavier University and Michael J. Graham, S.J., will serve as chair of the event.
